Hormone Replacement Therapy Q & A

What is hormone replacement therapy?

Testosterone plays many roles in your overall health as a man, as the hormone is involved in several important processes. As you age, your body naturally produces less and less testosterone, and this causes some men to experience a number of unpleasant mental and physical symptoms. In addition to the natural decline in testosterone levels, some men suffer from a condition called hypogonadism that causes an unnaturally low level of testosterone due to a dysfunction in the testicles.

Hormone replacement therapy, sometimes known in men as testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), attempts to counteract this shift in hormone levels.

How do I know if I have low testosterone?

Testosterone levels naturally start to get lower as you age, so almost all men over the age of 40 have less naturally occurring testosterone than they once did. Starting in your 30s, you’ll typically lose about 1% of your naturally occurring testosterone each calendar year, and the drop off may grow more drastic as you get older. Some of the most common signs of low testosterone or hypogonadism may include:

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence
  • Infertility
  • Insomnia or other sleep disturbances
  • Increased body fat, or reduced muscle bulk,
  • Swollen or tender breasts (gynecomastia)
  • Loss of body hair
  • Decreased energy
  • Decreased motivation or self-confidence
  • Depression
  • Loss of focus

If you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms, visit LaSara Medical Group and ask your provider for a blood test to determine if your testosterone levels are too low.

What does testosterone do?

Testosterone is responsible for many male sexual traits and plays an important part in a wide range of biological processes. Some of the most common ways that testosterone helps aging men include:

  • Boosting bone density
  • Changing fat distribution
  • Boosting strength and muscle mass
  • Boosting hair growth, including facial hair
  • Increased red blood cell production
  • Increased sex drive
  • Increased sperm production

Testosterone therapy can’t reverse the aging process, but it can make aging a more gradual process and limit the physical effects.
